How it started…

Trey Gillespie was born in Rock Hill, South Carolina and moved to Charleston, South Carolina to pursue a Bachelors degree in Geology & Environmental Geosciences from the College of Charleston. He has always found the oceans and their power extremely compelling, leading him to focus his geological studies on Coastal Dynamics and Barrier Island Geomorphology in Charleston - an apt location whose barrier islands, or ‘String of Pearls’, have been studied closely over the years.

During his undergraduate studies, Trey participated in various oceanographic and hydrographic research opportunities providing him invaluable experience in oceanographic science. These opportunities include several Explorer-in-Training mapping internships with NOAA Office of Ocean Exploration & Research, paleoceanographic seismic and coring missions to study ancient ocean basin environments, and the synthesis of mapping products for the generation of a global bathymetric grid in support of the GEBCO Seabed 2030 project at Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory at Columbia University.

Trey is currently an independent contractor in support of marine acoustic data acquisition and processing for both academic and commercial projects. He is also in the final stages of completing a Masters of Science in Environmental Science & Sustainability Studies from the College of Charleston.
